For some parents, there is no problem when kids don't want to do what parents consider to be in their best interests. All too often, parents cave in to their children's wants and find themselves doing what they want to do. They think they are being democratic as in fair or just when they ask the kids what they want to have (things/food) and what they want to do (learn/play/vacation). Is there anything wrong with that?
Yes, Absolutely.
A Christian household has rules that are based on and follow God's hierarchy; which is ~ God the Father, husband/father, wife/mother (Ephesians 5) and children - Ephesians 6 "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother which is the first commandment with a promise that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."
Parental guidance in God's hierarchy and life in general with its struggles is what children truly need; again parental guidance is needed in all aspects of their life even into adulthood. Parents are not dictators, they instruct what the Lord God expects. There is a necessary chain of command in God's hierarchy so that His word is kept, which keeps families, communities and all the world kept for God's purpose.
When children see parents respect God's hierarchy and seek
the Lord in their struggles, their sin, children will learn to do the
same. As children are commanded to honor and obey their parents all their life, loving parents are asked not to antagonize or exasperate 'provoke' their children (Ephesians 6); which, basically means not cause them to be adverse to parents and in a state of hostility toward them. This does not mean giving in to children's desires/wants.
Loving parents are disciplinarians while at the same time caregivers of God's treasure (family) and this they convey to and reassure their children of by showing their love and respect for God our Father in Heaven the Lord Jesus Christ and His hierarchy. In this way, His Kingdom comes and His will be done!
After all... He is the Creator of all heaven and earth and His purpose for us here includes our salvation which is for the greater good ~ The New Jerusalem.
